As a teacher, I always pay special attention to the furniture and equipment that kids use in the classroom. After all, a safe environment is the most crucial thing when you want to teach young people anything. Last week, we had a very unpleasant case at our school, and when I now look at it from a given perspective, I know that it might have been prevented. One of our students, ten-year-old David, fell off a chair and broke his arm. I wasn"t in the classroom at the time. They had an Art lesson with one of my colleagues. The school chairs that our kids use are quite safe. They are made of light materials and adjusted to the children"s height and age. However, that particular boy was two years older than the rest of the kids. He simply had to repeat a year, and then another, so now he"s in one group with children two years younger than him. And the Art lesson is a very special time. Kids are usually allowed to leave their desks and walk around the room. David didn"t stand up or walk, but he propped against the back of the chair with his whole mass and fell down, along with the chair. From that time on, the kids are only allowed to use school chairs that are suitable for their height and mass, and all the chairs are being checked to make sure they"re not wobbly.
